I had seen one of his films before, "Bruges", and he really improved a lot, not only as a director, but even as a screenwriter. Martin McDonagh is a new director, who many didn't know well before this film. And we see how, at times, the voice of the people can be more caustic and unfair than any other. We see how honest and potentially good men can be lost if they do not have an opportunity to improve their conduct, and how there are indeed people who are committed to their work, despite the criticism they receive. We see how the police want to act, but they can't for lack of evidence, for being forced to follow the law and not being able to simply arrest everything and everyone or treat each one as a suspect. In the wake of the story of the unsolved crime and the billboards, we observe the tense relationship and mutual misunderstandings between mother and daughter, and the way that mother feels remorse for the way she acted with her murdered daughter. it's just about wanting an end point and not just ellipses. The biggest problem with this incredible script turns out to be, in fact, the open ending and the feeling that it doesn't give the audience the conclusion they expect to see. Personally, I believe that the film would also have been a fair deserving of the award for Best Original Screenplay, since the differential of the film, for me, is to give us a script with an elegant and well done story, with drama and depth, and in that each character deserved a close look and an interesting development. It didn't win the statuette, nor a good part of the nominations received, but it left the Dolby Theater with two awards in important categories: Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. I remember perfectly that this film was one of the heavyweights of the 2018 Oscars, and one of the great candidates for the Oscar for Best Picture. The film strives to create and highlight the nuances of the plot and each of the characters. It's not the first film where the police are seen as villains, but it's far from being a lighthearted film, with friendly heroes and execrable villains. It's not This is an undoubtedly tense film, in which the story of an unsolved murder serves as the backdrop for a much deeper and more elaborate drama, in which the victim's inconsolable mother seeks, by all means, to force the police to seriously investigate what happened to his daughter. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying it.This is an undoubtedly tense film, in which the story of an unsolved murder serves as the backdrop for a much deeper and more elaborate drama, in which the victim's inconsolable mother seeks, by all means, to force the police to seriously investigate what happened to his daughter. 'Three Billboards' is, from start to finish, a great movie.
It is hard to mention something negative about this film. There is a racist cop, a friendly midget, a smart advertising guy and a pretty girl who is so dumb she doesn't know the difference between polo and polio.

And then there is the overall, almost Coen-esque atmosphere of a small town full of colourful characters. None of the characters are one-dimensional: they all reveal surprising parts of their personalities as the story moves forward. The story is full of unexpected twists, gradually shifting the positions of the main characters towards each other. Apart from McDormand's performance, the screenplay is another great feature of this film. The monologue she delivers when a priest visits her house to tell her she has gone too far, is priceless. Above all because of Mildred Hayes' stubborn character and her ability to verbally humiliate people by her extremely sharp tongue. Although the film is about grief, anger, revenge and violence, it is extremely funny. By doing so, she attracts the attention of the media, angers almost the entire town and causes a succession of increasingly violent actions. Frustrated by the lack of progress of the investigation, Hayes decides to rent three dilapidated billboards, publicly accusing the local police chief of incompetence. She had a daughter too, but the girl was raped and killed on a quiet mountain road not far from home. Hayes is a divorced single mother, living with her son on the outskirts of a small, remote town. The part of Mildred Hayes was written with McDormand in mind. This might well be her best performance ever. Mildred Hayes, the heroine from 'Three Billboards', is a serious contender. It seemed that the pregnant police detective Marge Gunderson from 'Fargo' would forever be the most memorable character of Frances McDormand's acting career.
